'This place', prescribes a discursive and textual presentation of 'place' through a re-writing of Samuel Becketts' third book of the Trilogy entitled 'the unnameable'. The work returns the idea of 'place' to the viewer as a question: 'this place' part 1 was printed onto vinyl tape and placed on steel railings around the Bay Area of Cardiff and onto disused railway tracks running through the old docklands - an interface between the port and the city. 'this place' part 2 was typed onto index cards and distributed on-site where responses were gathered from the public. Gallery work included a wall drawing event titled 'provisional' and used scotch tape and graphite to reference maps relating to 'this place' - Wales.
"Provisional", can mean "having the nature of a temporary arrangement made to meet special circumstances, and intended to last only as long as these circumstances last".* Opposing the historical map making of cartography, 'provisional' is a temporary route, not drawn on the traditional grid. It adopts the concept of the 'rhizome',* as a process of 'de-territorialisation', which is an act of de-stablisation, usurping the norms of topology (and cartographic convention). This drawing event has been executed to date in Belfast, Dublin, Costa-Rica and Limerick.
